What is THCA?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) is one of the 100-plus naturally occurring cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis sativa plant (it’s also found in hemp, a federally legal form of cannabis sativa that contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight).

THCa is the chemical precursor to THC; when heated, it turns into THC (this process is known as decarboxylation). Raw THCA will not create a head high, but in many cases, it’s consumed in a way that involves decarboxylation, allowing the user to experience the psychoactive effects.

What is THCA Flower?

THCA flower is dried cannabis sativa bud that’s been bred to contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Because it contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, it’s considered hemp and is therefore federally legal.

THCa turns into THC when heated through a process known as decarboxylation: you get the same effects from high-THCa, low-THC strains as you would from strains with a lower ratio of THCa to THC.

All cannabis flower strains tend to contain high levels of THCa, but they typically also contain significant percentages of THC, making them federally illegal and therefore not as widely available.

THCa flower is bred specifically to contain more THCa and less THC. This makes it legal, but due to decarboxylation, it still creates the potent effects you’d expect from regular THC flower.

Because THCa flower offers similar effects to regular cannabis flower while still being federally legal, it’s become an attractive addition to the shelves of CBD stores and smoke shops nationwide. It’s a product people want, and it’s completely legal to sell in most U.S. states.

What Are THCA Pre-Rolls?

THCA pre-rolls are cannabis sativa joints made using high-THCA flower that’s been ground and rolled for convenience. Since they contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, they are considered federally legal hemp products.

THCA pre-rolls provide a convenient way to enjoy the benefits of high-THCA strains without the need for grinding or rolling, making them a popular option for on-the-go hemp users.

What Are THCA Dabs?

THCA dabs are concentrated forms of cannabis sativa crafted for use with dab rigs or high-heat devices. These concentrates are known for their exceptional potency, often boasting THCA levels exceeding 90%, making them far stronger than traditional flower.

Dabs come in various forms, including wax, shatter, and crystalline structures. THCA wax, one of the most popular types, has a soft, pliable texture that makes it easy to handle and measure.

Other forms, like shatter, are brittle and glass-like, while crystalline dabs (THCA diamonds) look somewhat transparent and are popular for their high purity.

When THCA dabs are heated, the THCA is converted to THC, delivering a powerful and immediate head high. Many people like wax for its versatility, as it can be used with dab rigs, vape pens, or even as an addition to joints for an extra kick. Dabs are a go-to for seasoned users who prefer a potent, fast-acting experience.

What Are THCA Diamonds?

THCA diamonds are a form of cannabis sativa concentrate that, per their name, take the form of semi-transparent crystalline structures.

THCA diamonds are known for their high purity, with their THCA content often surpassing 99%. This makes diamonds several times more potent than THCA flower. But because the cannabinoid content in diamonds is THCa, not THC, they are still federally legal.

While tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) by itself renders very few effects, it turns into tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) when heated, which creates the signature high effect.

THCA diamonds can be consumed in a variety of ways, with the most common being the use of a dab rig and the addition of the diamonds to hemp joints.

Is THCA Legal?

Yes, THCA is federally legal in the US. Because THCA products contain 0.3% THC or less, they are considered hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill.

The THCA in these products is then converted to THC during the decarboxylation process, which happens when the products are used.

How Should THCA Flower Be Stored?

THCA flower will stay fresh the longest if stored in an airtight container and placed somewhere cool and dark. Generally, cannabinoids will degrade if exposed to light, heat, and oxygen.

When it’s not on display, THCA flower should be kept somewhere where it will be minimally exposed to these elements.

How Can You Ensure the Quality of THCA Flower?

If you’re shopping online for THCA flower for your store, there are a few main things you’ll want to do to ensure you’re getting a high-quality product:

Source from reputable companies

Only purchase flower that’s been grown by licensed and regulated producers (all of our flower qualifies!). This will ensure your compliance with legal (the THC limit) and quality standards.

Additionally, only buy lab-tested products with certificates of analysis (COAs) that verify their THCA content, THC levels (to confirm it’s less than 0.3%), and absence of contaminants like pesticides, mold, or heavy metals.

Inspect the flower’s appearance

High-quality THCA flower will be vibrant and coated with visible trichomes, which indicate cannabinoid and terpene richness – both things that add to the experience your flower provides.

Additionally, if you’re inspecting flower in-person, the buds should be well-formed, sticky to the touch, and not overly dry or brittle.

Evaluate the aroma

High-quality THCA flower should have a robust, fresh aroma that reflects the strain’s terpene profile.

A lack of smell or a musty scent may be indicative of old or poorly stored flower.

Inspect the packaging

Make sure the THCA flower you’re buying is stored in containers that are airtight and light-resistant to preserve potency and freshness.

Additionally, the packaging should clearly display strain information, THCA and THC percentages, harvest date, and the producer’s details.

Read customer reviews

Last but certainly not least, read reviews from other people and companies that have purchased the THCA flower you’re looking at: if the reviews are mostly positive, the product is likely high-quality – and vice versa.
