What is THCA?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the cannabis sativa plant (hemp is a federally legal variant of cannabis sativa that contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight).

THCA can be thought of as an acidic version of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) because it’s THC, plus an acid ring. When THCA is heated, this acid ring is removed (this process is known as decarboxylation) and the THCA becomes THC.

THCA has few effects in raw form, but when heated, it turns into THC, its “activated” form, which is psychoactive and has a variety of potential therapeutic benefits.

What’s the Difference Between THCA and THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is essentially the acidic form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When THCA is heated (decarboxylated), it loses its acid ring (the ‘A) and becomes THC.

In this way, THCA has very few effects in raw form, but is “activated” when heated, turning into THC and giving the signature high effect.

THCA and THC differ in three primary ways: their origin in the cannabis sativa plant, their potency, and their side effects.

  1. Origin: All THC starts as THCA. Therefore, THCA levels in young cannabis sativa plants are much higher, but as the plant grows, much more of this THCA becomes THC. By strategically breeding and harvesting the plant, growers can get high-THCA, low-THC strains.
  2. Strength: Raw THCA does not create a noticeable mental effect, while THC (“activated” THCA), does create a euphoric, relaxing head high. THC is the cannabinoid primarily responsible for the well-known effects of the cannabis sativa plant.
  3. Side effects: Not much is known about the side effects of raw THCA. However, anecdotal evidence suggests THCA may cause some people to feel slightly drowsy, while causing others to feel energized. THC, on the other hand, may create side effects such as anxiety, dry mouth, memory loss, difficulty thinking and speaking, red eyes, delayed reaction time, heart rate increases, and increased appetite.

What Are the Effects of THCA?

By itself, THCA has few noticeable effects, making raw THCA products.

However, THCA turns into THC when heated (this happens when you heat concentrates), and THC creates the signature euphoric and relaxing effects associated with the cannabis sativa plant.

What Are the Potential Benefits of THCA?

While THCA isn’t typically consumed in raw form, it offers therapeutic benefits even before it’s converted to THC.

While more research is needed to fully understand its effects, preliminary studies and anecdotal reports suggest THCA may have the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: THCA may have stabilizing properties on the inflammatory response, making it potentially beneficial for those with conditions involving inflammation.
  • Neuroprotective Effects: Early research suggests that THCA might protect nerve cells, potentially protecting against neurodegeneration.
  • Anti-Nausea Properties: THCA could be helpful in stimulating appetite, making it a promising option for those with conditions or undergoing treatments that suppress the appetite.
  • Muscle Relaxation: THCA may provide mild muscle-relaxing effects, which indicates it may have therapeutic potential for promoting mobility and comfort and addressing muscle tension or spasms.
  • Non-Psychoactive: Unlike THC, raw THCA doesn’t cause a high, making it an option for those seeking therapeutic benefits without psychoactive effects.

While THCA isn’t an FDA-approved treatment for any medical condition, and far more research would be needed before it can be regarded as such, early studies show it has therapeutic potential.

THC, the converted form of THCA, offers many of the same benefits plus others. Research suggests THC has potential benefits for physical discomfort, sleep, stress, nausea, appetite, and more.

What Are THCA Concentrates?

THCA concentrates (also called THCA dabs) are highly refined cannabis sativa products that contain high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

If they are made to contain less than 0.3% THC, THCA concentrates are considered hemp products (THCA is not the same as THC, which makes high potency and federally legal status possible at the same time).

THCA concentrates are designed to deliver potent effects and are ideal if you’re an experienced connoisseur looking for an intense experience. Concentrates are extracted to remove plant material, leaving behind pure, potent cannabinoids.

Types of THCA concentrates include:

  • THCA Diamonds: Crystalline concentrates that boast exceptionally high purity and potency.
  • THCA Wax: Soft, pliable concentrates that resemble wax and are easy to consume using a dab rig.
  • THCA Sugar Wax: A type of THCA wax concentrate that resembles granulated sugar.
  • THCA Shatter: A glass-like concentrate that breaks easily and can be added to THCA joints or inhaled through a bong rig.
  • THCA Live Resin: A concentrate extracted from fresh, flash-frozen cannabis that contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes for a rich, flavorful experience.
  • THCA Live Rosin: A solventless concentrate made from heat and pressure that offers a clean, terpene-rich option.

How Are THCA Concentrates Made?

Because there are so many different types of THCA concentrate, the exact method used to make THCA concentrates will vary.

That being said, the general step-by-step process is as follows:

  1. Harvesting: High-THCA cannabis plants are selected and harvested.
  2. Extraction: The cannabinoids are extracted using methods such as CO2, butane, or ethanol. Solventless techniques like heat and pressure may also be used for options like live rosin.
  3. Purification: After extraction, the material undergoes a refinement process to remove unwanted compounds like plant waxes, chlorophyll, and lipids.
  4. Crystallization: For products like THCA diamonds, the extract is subjected to specific conditions that encourage crystal formation, resulting in ultra-pure concentrates.
  5. Curing: The final product is cured or dried, ensuring stability and optimal quality.

This process creates potent, pure concentrates that pack powerful and distinctive effects.

Are THCA Concentrates Legal?

Yes, THCA concentrates are legal because they contain THCA in raw form, rather than THC (the THCA is only converted to THC once the concentrate is heated).

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products, which are defined as those containing less than 0.3% THC, are federally legal.

Will THCA Show Up On a Drug Test?

Yes, THCA will show up on a drug test. THCA turns into THC when heated, and THC is a target analyte on drug tests due to its presence in marijuana (cannabis sativa containing more than 0.3% THC), which is federally illegal.

How Long Does THCA Stay In Your System?

The duration of time THCA stays in your system is dependent on a variety of factors, including metabolism, how often you use it, and how you consume it.

Once THCA is heated, it converts to THC, and the body metabolizes it such:

  • Occasional Users: THC metabolites may remain detectable for up to 3–5 days in urine.
  • Frequent Users: With regular use, THC metabolites can linger for 10–45 days or more.
  • Other Testing Methods: Hair tests may detect THC for up to 90 days, while blood and saliva tests typically have shorter detection windows (a few hours to a couple of days).

Apart from the major factors listed above, factors like hydration, body fat percentage, and overall health can play a role in clearance times.

If you have to undergo drug testing randomly or regularly, we recommend you avoid consuming THCA products.
