What is THCA Flower?
THCA flower is dried cannabis sativa bud that’s been bred to contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Because it contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, it’s considered hemp and is therefore federally legal.
THCa turns into THC when heated through a process known as decarboxylation: you get the same effects from high-THCa, low-THC strains as you would from strains with a lower ratio of THCa to THC.
All cannabis flower strains tend to contain high levels of THCa, but they typically also contain significant percentages of THC, making them federally illegal and therefore not as widely available.
THCa flower is bred specifically to contain more THCa and less THC. This makes it legal, but due to decarboxylation, it still creates the potent effects you’d expect from regular THC flower.
What Are the Effects of THCA Flower?
By itself, THCA has few noticeable effects, making raw THCA flower mostly devoid of effects.
However, THCA turns into THC when heated (e.g. as when you smoke a pre roll), and THC creates the signature euphoric and relaxing effects associated with the cannabis sativa plant.
Therefore, THCA flower will create a head high just as THC flower will, allowing you to enjoy the therapeutic and recreational benefits of the plant, but legally.
How to Use THCA Flower
THCA flower can be used just like regular THC flower. Here are some of the main ways you can consume it:
- Smoking: The easiest and more common way to use THCA flower is to grind it up and roll it into a joint. When you light the joint, the THCA flower will convert to THC, giving you those signature effects.
- Vaping: If you don’t want to smoke, you can use a dry herb vape to inhale your THCA flower. These devices heat the flower to its activation temperature without creating any of the harmful byproducts of combustion.
- Baking: If you’d prefer to consume your THCA flower in an edible form, you can bake with it by converting it into a THC-rich butter, then using this butter in baked goods. This can be done by boiling the THC flower with water and butter (to decarboxylate the THCA), straining out the flower pieces, then cooling the mixture in the freezer (which allows the butter to solidify at the top).
What’s the Difference Between THCA and THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is essentially the acidic form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When THCA is heated (decarboxylated), it loses its acid ring (the ‘A) and becomes THC.
In this way, THCA has very few effects in raw form, but is “activated” when heated, turning into THC and giving the signature high effect.
THCA and THC differ in three primary ways: their origin in the cannabis sativa plant, their potency, and their side effects.
- Origin: All THC starts as THCA. Therefore, THCA levels in young cannabis sativa plants are much higher, but as the plant grows, much more of this THCA becomes THC. By strategically breeding and harvesting the plant, growers can get high-THCA, low THC strains.
- Strength: Raw THCA does not create a noticeable mental effect, while THC (“activated” THCA), does create a euphoric, relaxing head high. THC is the cannabinoid primarily responsible for the well-known effects of the cannabis sativa plant.
- Side effects: Not much is known about the side effects of raw THCA. HOwever, anecdotal evidence suggests THCA may cause some people to feel slightly drowsy, while causing others to feel energized. THC, on the other hand, may create side effects such as anxiety, dry mouth, memory loss, difficulty thinking and speaking, red eyes, delayed reaction time, heart rate increases, and increased appetite.
Is THCA Flower Legal?
Yes, THCA flower is federally legal in the US, although it’s restricted in certain states.
In its raw form, THCA flower contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, which means it’s considered hemp under US law, which is federally legal as of the 2018 Farm Bill.
Will THCA Flower Show Up On a Drug Test?
Yes, THCA flower will show up on a drug test. THCA turns into THC when heated, and THC is a target analyte on drug tests due to its presence in marijuana (cannabis sativa containing more than 0.3% THC), which is federally illegal.
It’s not known whether raw THCA will show up on a drug test, however, given its chemical similarity to THC, it’s safe to assume it might.
What to Look For When Buying THCA Flower
There are a few main things you’ll want to look for when shopping for THCA flower:
3rd-party lab testing
Only buy THCA flower that’s been 3rd-party lab tested. The hemp market is largely unregulated and there’s a lot of bad quality flower out there. We’re dedicated to providing the best-quality flower: we back that up with lab tests. Every reputable company will do the same.
All-natural flower
Only buy all-natural THCA flower. This will ensure the flower you buy is free of low-quality additives that don’t add to the experience and may even be harmful. All-natural flower is richer in naturally-occurring cannabinoids (such as THCA), making it better for both therapeutic and recreational use.
Effects and potency
When you’re shopping for THCA flower, ensure you buy a product that provides the experience you’re looking for. There are two main things you’ll want to look for:
- THCA percentage: The amount of THCA in the strain will determine how potent it is. Ensure you select a strain that’s appropriate for your preferences and level of experience. High-grade THCA flower will contain 20% or more THCA, while low-grade flower will contain around 15% THCA.
- Other cannabinoid content: If THCA flower contains other cannabinoids (whether naturally or through infusion), it will render different effects than THCA flower with minimal amounts of these other cannabinoids.

THCA Flower FAQs
Will THCA flower get you high?
Yes, THCA flower will get you high because THCA turns into THC when heated (as when smoked). THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid that creates a euphoric head high.
Is THCA flower safe to smoke?
Yes, THCA flower is safe to smoke. THCA flower is simply regular THC flower that’s been bred to contain more THCA and less THC in its raw form; it’s 100% natural.
Which THCA flower is the strongest?
THCA flowers with higher THCA levels will be the strongest, as this THCA will be converted into THC when you smoke the flower.
How should THCA flower be stored?
THCA flower will stay fresh the longest if stored in an airtight container and placed somewhere cool and dark. Generally, cannabinoids will degrade if exposed to light, heat, and oxygen: when you’re not using it, aim to put your THCA flower somewhere where it will be minimally exposed to these elements.
