What Are THCA Diamonds?

THCA diamonds are a form of cannabis sativa concentrate that, per their name, take the form of semi-transparent crystalline structures.

THCA diamonds are known for their high purity, with their THCA content often surpassing 99%. This makes diamonds several times more potent than THCA flower.

While tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) by itself renders very few effects, it turns into tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) when heated, which creates the signature high effect. Diamonds are typically crushed up and used in joints, allowing this process to happen.

How Are THCA Diamonds Made?

THCA diamonds are made from another type of concentrate called sauce. Sauce is made through a process that involves adding solvent to hemp, then removing it to create a solution (a concentrate).

This concentrate then undergoes another process, called diamond mining, in which heat and pressure are applied to create the crystalline structures that are THCA diamonds.

What Are the Effects of THCA Diamonds?

THCA diamonds contain tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), an acidic cannabinoid that creates few noticeable effects.

However, THCA turns into THC when heated through a process known as decarboxylation, where the acid ring (the “A”) in THCA is removed, leaving THC.

THCA diamonds are typically added to joints or consumed using a vape or dab rig, all methods that involve heating it to the point that decarboxylation occurs. Therefore, what you’re inhaling is THC, not THCA.

THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the effects of cannabis and is well-known for the euphoric, relaxing head high it creates.

How to Use THCA Diamonds

THCA diamonds can be consumed in a variety of ways:

  • Smoking: You can smoke THCA diamonds by adding a small amount of them to your bowl or joint, which will increase the potency of your flower.
  • Vaping: THCA diamonds can be inhaled using a vaporizer (of which there are many types), which converts the diamonds into vapor without burning them.
  • Dabbing: THCA diamonds can be inhaled using a dab rig, which typically consists of a glass piece with a nail attachment, a torch, and a dab tool. Heat the nail, scoop THCA diamonds onto it once it’s hot, and then inhale the vapor as it’s produced.
  • Hot Knifing: An old-school THCA diamond consumption method, hot knifing involves heating two metal knives and then carefully pressing a small amount of THCA diamonds between them. As the vapor forms, it can inhale it using a straw or a similar device.
  • Glass Dab Straw (Nectar Collector): THCA diamonds can be consumed using a glass dab straw, where the tip of the straw is heated with a torch and dipped directly into the THCA diamonds. You can then inhale through the opposite end.
  • Moon Rocks: Combine THCA diamonds with flower buds and coat them in kief to create moon rocks. These can be broken apart and smoked in a bowl or bong or mixed with flower for an incredibly potent experience.

In addition to consuming THCA diamond concentrates by themselves, you can also buy THCA diamond pre-rolls, THCA diamond flower, and THCA diamond vapes that have been pre-infused with this concentrate.

THCA Diamonds vs. Other Concentrates

THCA diamonds are one of the purest concentrates out there. But they have other properties which may make them a good option for your needs – here’s how THCA diamonds compare to other concentrates such as wax, shatter, resin, and rosin.

Purity and Potency

  • THCA Diamonds: Among the purest concentrates available, THCA diamonds often surpass 99% THCA content. Once heated, they provide an exceptionally potent THC experience.
  • Wax and Shatter: These concentrates typically range from 60% to 90% cannabinoid content, making them less potent but still effective for balanced effects.
  • Live Resin and Rosin: These focus on terpene preservation, resulting in a flavorful experience, but their potency (50%-80%) is generally lower than diamonds.

Texture and Handling

  • THCA Diamonds: Their crystalline structure makes them harder and more brittle, requiring careful handling. They are ideal for dabbing or crushing into a fine powder for mixing.
  • Wax and Shatter: Wax is pliable and easy to handle, while shatter is brittle like diamonds but less pure. Both are versatile for various uses.
  • Live Resin and Rosin: These have a softer, stickier texture, making them easier to work with for beginners and great for spreading or topping flower.

Consumption Methods

  • THCA Diamonds: Best suited for dabbing, vaping, or enhancing the potency of flower. Their potency makes them a favorite for experienced users seeking powerful effects.
  • Wax and Shatter: Can be dabbed, vaped, or smoked with flower. They are widely used for their balance of potency and usability.
  • Live Resin and Rosin: Often dabbed to savor their rich terpene profiles, they’re also used for vaping or spreading on joints for added flavor and mild potency.

Flavor and Terpene Profile

  • THCA Diamonds: While potent, diamonds are relatively low in terpenes unless paired with sauce, offering a less flavorful experience.
  • Wax and Shatter: Contain moderate terpene levels, providing a good balance of flavor and effects.
  • Live Resin and Rosin: These are terpene-rich concentrates, offering the most flavorful experience due to minimal processing and fresh plant extraction.

In terms of potency and purity, THCA diamonds are the best option, making them ideal for experienced connoisseurs. Wax, shatter, resin, and rosin cater more to those who prioritize flavor and texture over potency.

Are THCA Diamonds Legal?

Yes, THCA diamonds are legal because they contain THCA in raw form, rather than THC (the THCA is only converted to THC once the diamonds are heated).

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products, which are defined as those containing less than 0.3% THC, are federally legal.

Will THCA Diamonds Show Up On a Drug Test?

Yes, THCA diamonds will show up on a drug test. THCA turns into THC when heated, and THC is a target analyte on drug tests due to its presence in marijuana (cannabis sativa containing more than 0.3% THC), which is federally illegal.

THCA Diamonds FAQs

Can you eat THCA diamonds?

While eating THCA diamonds is theoretically safe, you probably won’t want to do this because the THCA won’t be converted to THC and you won’t feel any of the psychoactive effects. Instead, it’s recommended that you use THCA diamonds in a way that involves heating them, allowing decarboxylation (the conversion of THCA to THC) to happen.

Does THCA get you high?

No, THCA by itself won’t get you high. However, when heated, it turns into THC, which will get you high.

Why are THCA diamonds so expensive?

THCA diamonds are typically more expensive than other THCA products because they contain such a high cannabinoid concentration. Diamonds often contain upward of 99% THCA.

Is THCA federally legal?

Yes, THCA is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which made hemp-derived products (those containing less than 0.3% THC by dry weight) legal.
