What is THCA?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the cannabis sativa plant (hemp is a federally legal variant of cannabis sativa that contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight).

THCA can be thought of as an acidic version of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) because it’s THC, plus an acid ring. When THCA is heated, this acid ring is removed (this process is known as decarboxylation) and the THCA becomes THC.

THCA has few effects in raw form, but when heated, it turns into THC, its “activated” form, which is psychoactive and has a variety of potential therapeutic benefits.

What’s the Difference Between THCA and THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is essentially the acidic form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When THCA is heated (decarboxylated), it loses its acid ring (the ‘A’) and becomes THC.

In this way, THCA has very few effects in raw form, but is “activated” when heated, turning into THC and creating psychoactive effects.

THCA and THC differ in three primary ways: their origin in the cannabis sativa plant, their potency, and their side effects.

  1. Origin: All THC starts as THCA. Therefore, THCA levels in young cannabis sativa plants are much higher, but as the plant grows, much more of this THCA becomes THC. By strategically breeding and harvesting the plant, growers can get high-THCA, low-THC strains.
  2. Strength: Raw THCA does not create a noticeable mental effect, while THC (“activated” THCA), does create a euphoric, relaxing head high. THC is the cannabinoid primarily responsible for the well-known effects of the cannabis sativa plant.
  3. Side effects: Not much is known about the side effects of raw THCA. However, anecdotal evidence suggests THCA may cause some people to feel slightly drowsy or energized. THC, on the other hand, may create side effects such as anxiety, dry mouth, memory loss, difficulty thinking and speaking, red eyes, delayed reaction time, heart rate increases, and increased appetite.

What is Sativa THCA Flower?

Sativa THCA flower is a type of cannabis sativa flower that’s bred to create uplifting, energizing sensations (indica flower creates relaxing sensations, while hybrid flower creates a mix of the two).

Unlike regular sativa flower, though, sativa THCA flower has been bred to contain high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and less tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Because it contains less than 0.3% THC, it’s considered federally legal hemp flower.

Its potency isn’t affected, however, because the THCA is converted to THC when the flower is heated (as when smoked in a joint).

Sativa strains are known for their energizing, uplifting, mood-boosting effects. Because of their uplifting effect profile, sativa strains are popular for daytime use, as they allow people to mentally relax without becoming tired or couch-locked.

What Are the Effects of Sativa THCA Flower?

Sativa THCA flower tend to be uplifting and energizing. Specific effects may include feelings of euphoria, focus, energy, inspiration, and mental clarity.

Because they promote mental clarity without drowsiness, many people use sativa flower strains and other sativa products as they hit the gym, explore the outdoors, or enjoy a day off working on a creative project or other hobby.

However, sativa THCA flower does still cause some inebriation due to its psychoactivity, so it shouldn't be used if you’re going to be driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing some other activity that requires a great deal of precision and/or is potentially dangerous.

Potential Side Effects and Risks of Sativa THCA Flower

While sativa THCA flower is mentally uplifting and beneficial for both therapeutic and recreational uses, it has the potential to cause adverse side effects (due to the fact that it converts into THC, which is psychoactive):

Potential side effects of THCA flower include:

  • Difficulty thinking and speaking
  • Anxiety
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased appetite
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Memory loss
  • Red eyes
  • Slowed reaction time
  • Overstimulation (unique to sativa flower)
  • Inability to sleep (unique to sativa flower)

Additionally, we strongly recommend you consult with your doctor before consuming THCA flower if you’re dealing with medical conditions or taking prescription medications.

Depending on how you consume it, THCA flower may aggravate certain conditions more than it will help, and cannabinoids are contraindicated with many prescription drugs.

While it might be safe to consume THCA flower in your situation, we recommend you err on the side of caution and consult your doctor first.

How to Use Sativa THCA Flower

Sativa THCA flower can be used just like regular THC flower. Here are some of the main ways you can consume it:

  • Smoking: The easiest and more common way to use THCA flower is to grind it up and roll it into a joint. When you light the joint, the flower will convert to THC, giving you those signature effects.
  • Vaping: If you don’t want to smoke, you can use a dry herb vape to inhale your THCA flower. These devices heat the flower to its activation temperature without creating any of the harmful byproducts of combustion.
  • Baking: If you’d prefer to consume your THCA flower in an edible form, you can bake with it by converting it into a THC-rich butter, then using this butter in baked goods. This can be done by boiling the THC flower with water and butter (to decarboxylate the THCA), straining out the flower pieces, then cooling the mixture in the freezer (which allows the butter to solidify at the top).

However, here are a few standout sativa strains that have become fan-favorites:

  • Jack Herer: Named after the legendary cannabis activist, Jack Herer is a well-balanced sativa that blends uplifting energy with a touch of relaxation. Known for its spicy, piney flavor profile, Jack Herer is excellent for creative endeavors, social activities, or simply adding extra brightness to your day. Its versatility makes it a top choice for both novice and experienced users.

Is THCA Flower Legal?

Yes, THCA flower is federally legal in the US, although it’s restricted in certain states.

In its raw form, THCA flower contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight, which means it’s considered hemp under US law, which is federally legal as of the 2018 Farm Bill.

Will THCA Flower Show Up On a Drug Test?

Yes, THCA flower will show up on a drug test. THCA turns into THC when heated, and THC is a target analyte on drug tests due to its presence in marijuana (cannabis sativa containing more than 0.3% THC), which is federally illegal.

It’s not known whether raw THCA will show up on a drug test, however, given its chemical similarity to THC, it’s safe to assume it might.

What to Look For When Buying Sativa THCA Flower

There are a few main things you’ll want to look for when shopping for THCA flower:

3rd-party lab testing

Only buy THCA flower that’s been 3rd-party lab tested. The hemp market is largely unregulated and there’s a lot of bad quality flower out there. We’re dedicated to providing the best-quality flower: we back that up with lab tests. Every reputable company will do the same.

All-natural flower

Only buy all-natural sativa THCA flower. This will ensure the flower you buy is free of low-quality additives that don’t add to the experience and may even be harmful. All-natural flower is richer in naturally-occurring cannabinoids (such as THCA), making it better for both therapeutic and recreational use.

Effects and potency

When you’re shopping for THCA flower, ensure you buy a product that provides the experience you’re looking for. There are three main things you’ll want to look for:

  1. THCA percentage: The amount of THCA in the strain will determine how potent it is. Ensure you select a strain that’s appropriate for your preferences and level of experience. High-grade THCA flower will contain 20% or more THCA, while low-grade flower will contain around 15% THCA.
  2. Other cannabinoid content: If THCA flower contains other cannabinoids (whether naturally or through infusion), it will render different effects than THCA flower with minimal amounts of these other cannabinoids.
  3. Effect profile: While many things determine the effect profile a particular strain has, you’ll want to look for THCA flower strains that are specifically labeled as sativa. These flower strains will have the energizing, uplifting effects you’re looking for.

Sativa THCA Flower FAQs

What is THCA sativa?

THCA Sativa refers to cannabis sativa flower bred to contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and minimal THC. Sativa strains are known for their uplifting, energizing effects, and THCA sativa flower offers a legal alternative that provides these benefits when decarboxylated (heated).

What does THCA do for the body?

THCA may provide several potential benefits, including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antiemetic properties. While raw THCA is non-psychoactive, it converts to THC when heated, which can offer relaxation and euphoria.

Is THCA psychoactive?

Raw THCA is not psychoactive. However, when exposed to heat through smoking, vaping, or baking, THCA converts into THC, which is psychoactive and responsible for the “high” typically associated with cannabis.

Is sativa an upper or a downer?

Sativa is considered an upper. It is known for its stimulating and uplifting effects, which may enhance focus, creativity, and energy levels. This makes sativa strains ideal for daytime use.
