What is THCA?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the cannabis sativa plant (hemp is a federally legal variant of cannabis sativa that contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight).

THCA can be thought of as an acidic version of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) because it’s THC, plus an acid ring. When THCA is heated, this acid ring is removed (this process is known as decarboxylation) and the THCA becomes THC.

THCA has few effects in raw form, but heated THCA (THC) is psychoactive and has a variety of potential therapeutic benefits.

What’s the Difference Between THCA and THC?

THCA and THC differ in three primary ways: their origin in the cannabis sativa plant, their potency, and their side effects.

  1. Origin: All THC starts as THCA. Therefore, THCA levels in young cannabis sativa plants are much higher, but as the plant grows, much more of this THCA becomes THC.
  2. Strength: Raw THCA does not create a noticeable mental effect, while THC (“activated” THCA), does create a euphoric, relaxing head high. THC is the cannabinoid primarily responsible for the well-known effects of the cannabis sativa plant.
  3. Side Effects: Anecdotal evidence suggests THCA may cause some people to feel slightly drowsy, while causing others to feel energized. THC, on the other hand, may create side effects such as anxiety, dry mouth, memory loss, difficulty thinking and speaking, red eyes, delayed reaction time, heart rate increases, and increased appetite.

What Are the Effects of THCA?

By itself, THCA has few noticeable effects, making raw THCA products.

However, THCA turns into THC when heated (this happens when you heat concentrates), and THC creates the signature euphoric and relaxing effects associated with the cannabis sativa plant.

What Are the Potential Benefits of THCA?

Preliminary studies and anecdotal reports suggest THCA may have the following benefits:

  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: THCA may have stabilizing properties on the inflammatory response, making it potentially beneficial for those with conditions involving inflammation.
  • Neuroprotective Effects: Early research suggests that THCA might protect nerve cells, potentially protecting against neurodegeneration.
  • Anti-Nausea Properties: THCA could be helpful in stimulating appetite, making it a promising option for those with conditions or undergoing treatments that suppress the appetite.
  • Muscle Relaxation: THCA may provide mild muscle-relaxing effects, which indicates it may have therapeutic potential for promoting mobility and comfort and addressing muscle tension or spasms.

Note that THCA isn’t an FDA-approved treatment for any medical condition, and more research on its benefits is needed.

THC, the converted form of THCA, offers many of the same benefits plus others. Research suggests THC has potential benefits for physical discomfort, sleep, stress, nausea, appetite, and more.

What Are THCA Concentrates?

THCA concentrates (also called THCA dabs) are highly purified extracts made from the cannabis sativa plant that contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

Concentrates are made using extraction processes that strip away much of the plant material, leaving behind concentrated THCA, as well as secondary cannabinoids and terpenes (in some cases).

Concentrates come in many different forms and can be consumed in many different ways. When the THCA in concentrates is heated, it’s converted to THC, rendering the classic euphoric, relaxing effects associated with the cannabis plant.

How Are THCA Concentrates Made?

Because there are so many different types of THCA concentrate, the exact method used to make THCA concentrates will vary.

However, the general step-by-step process is as follows:

  1. Harvesting: High-THCA cannabis plants are selected and harvested.
  2. Extraction: The cannabinoids are extracted using methods such as CO2, butane, or ethanol. Solventless techniques like heat and pressure may also be used for options like live rosin.
  3. Purification: After extraction, the material undergoes a refinement process to remove unwanted compounds like plant waxes, chlorophyll, and lipids.
  4. Crystallization: For products like THCA diamonds, the extract is subjected to specific conditions that encourage crystal formation, resulting in ultra-pure concentrates.
  5. Curing: The final product is cured or dried, ensuring stability and optimal quality.

This process creates potent, pure concentrates that pack powerful and distinctive effects.

Are THCA Concentrates Legal?

Yes, THCA concentrates are legal because they contain THCA in raw form, rather than THC (the THCA is only converted to THC once the concentrate is heated).

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products, which are defined as those containing less than 0.3% THC, are federally legal.

Will THCA Show Up On a Drug Test?

Yes, THCA will show up on a drug test. THCA turns into THC when heated, and THC is a target analyte on drug tests due to its presence in marijuana (cannabis sativa containing more than 0.3% THC), which is federally illegal.

How Long Does THCA Stay In Your System?

The duration of time THCA (or THC) stays in your system is dependent on a variety of factors, including your metabolism, how often you use it, and how you consume it:

  • Occasional Users: THC metabolites may remain detectable for up to 3–5 days in urine.
  • Frequent Users: With regular use, THC metabolites can linger for 10–45 days or more.
  • Other Testing Methods: Hair tests may detect THC for up to 90 days, while blood and saliva tests typically have shorter detection windows (a few hours to a couple of days).

Factors like hydration, body fat percentage, and overall health can also play a role in clearance times.

If you have to undergo drug testing randomly or regularly, we recommend you avoid consuming THCA products.

THCA Dabs FAQs

Does THCA wax get you high?

Yes, THCA wax will get you high when heated. Once heated through dabbing or vaping, the THCA is converted into THC, which delivers the euphoric, psychoactive effects cannabis is known for.

What are THCA dabs?

THCA dabs are potent concentrates – like wax, crumble, or diamonds – that are vaporized using a dab rig or similar device. When heated, the THCA transforms into THC, producing fast-acting and powerful effects.

What are the downsides of THCA?

Potential downsides of THCA include strong psychoactive effects after heating, which may be too intense for new users. Some people may experience anxiety, dry mouth, or rapid heart rate, especially with high-potency products.

What states banned THCA?

Several states have banned or restricted the sale of THCA, including Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, and Rhode Island. Laws are rapidly changing, so it’s always best to check your local regulations before purchasing these products online.
